Tradition: Ceremonial Kiss

"You may now kiss the bride." Such a simple phrase that has become so common while holding incredible meaning. Dating back to the Roman times a kiss sealed and confirmed the couple's agreement to join in a life-long commitment.  The kiss symbolizes or represents the couple sharing and joining their souls.

Something Old

If you are pressed for time, you can always throw on a pair of old stockings to take care of this part of the rhyme... but you don't want to do that. You may be lucky enough to wear your mother's wedding gown, but if not, the following suggestions are as apropos as they are old.

  • A vintage engagement ring or wedding band
  • The veil your grandmother wore in her wedding
  • Antique or heirloom earrings or bracelet
  • A tiny vintage purse
  • Vintage buttons on your wedding dress

Traditions: White Wedding Dress

So we know as little girls that when we grow up and get married we are supposed to wear a beautiful white bridal gown. The question remains....why white? When did that tradition start?

Wearing the white gown dates back to the Victoria times when Queen Victoria abandoned the usual royal tradition of wearing a silver gown. Instead Queen Victoria decided to wear a white gown during her wedding ceremony.  Before that time brides simply wore their best gown, rather than a dress specific for a wedding.  The popularity of white then rose. Factors such as the symbolization of purity and virginity became important. White was also thought to ward off evil spirits.
